Multipath TCP under Massive Packet Reordering
نویسنده
چکیده
Conventional wisdom states that TCP performs poorly when packets arrive out of order. Reordered packets interact poorly with TCP’s fast retransmit mechanism. For this reason, multipath routing is rarely used in the Internet, although it is supported by routers and routing protocols. Data center networks are very different from the Internet, having regular topologies, high-capacitylow-latency links, and switches with very small packet buffers. Per-packed load balancing would be extremely efficient in data center networks, eliminating the need to schedule the paths of individual TCP flows and the need to maintain per-flow state in each switch. In this paper, we survey techniques for making TCP more robust to packet reordering, in the hope of making per-packet load balancing a reality.

A Multipath TCP model for ns-3 simulator
We present an implementation of Multipath TCP (MPTCP) under the NS-3 open source network simulator. MPTCP is a promising extension of TCP currently considered by the recent eponymous IETF working group, with the objective of improving the performance of TCP, especially its robustness to variable network conditions. We describe this new protocol, its main functions and our implementation in NS3....
متن کاملTCP-R with EPDN: Handling out of Order Packets in Error Prone Satellite Networks
Studies have shown that packet reordering is common, especially in satellite networks where there are link level retransmissions and multipath routing. Moreover, traditional satellite networks exhibit high corruption rates causing packet losses. Reordering and corruption of packets decrease the TCP performance of a network, mainly because it leads to overestimation of the congestion in the netw...

This paper studies the effect of out-of-order packets on the MPTCP performance when using different access technologies, modelled to represent path diversity in terms of delay and reliability. The study identifies trade-offs between different CC algorithms in terms of aggregate throughput gain when different packet reordering recovery solutions being implemented. Our analysis shows that TCP-DOO...
متن کاملInternet Traffic Distribution over Multilink Where High Bandwidth Scalable Switch Port Aggregates Multiple Physical Links
A logical link composed of multiple physical links is in extensive use in today’s Internet and its use is growing due to good scalability, reliability and cost-effectiveness. When IP packets are distributed over such physical links, load unbalancing and packet reordering may occur. Since packet reordering degrades TCP performance, a good traffic distribution method must reduce the amount of reo...
